Ride the Helicopter!
Imagine yourself embarking on path that leads to something you really want. Maybe you want that Olympic athlete’s body or graduate with honors and dive into your dream career. Maybe you want to raise the next imam of the Kabah.
Whatever your goal is, you’re ready, and so you set out to get it. Now picture yourself driving in a car towards that fantastic goal. The road stretches in front of you with bumps and potholes. And every time you draw near a bump, you brace yourself and rattle in your car. The ride feels horrible and every meter or so, you encounter another pothole. You become so focused on the potholes that you forget about your lofty goal. All you can think about is how miserable this ride is and how you can get off this monstrous path.
Now imagine that you’re on the same road except you’re in a helicopter, far far above it. You’re soaring in the helicopter and it’s easy to see that end goal. And since the path is so clear from up here, the bumps and potholes are now out of sight. How does this helicopter ride feel? Stupendous, I believe! It’s more pleasurable because you’re focusing on your destination. The problems and hurdles along the way become microscopic and you enjoy the beautiful journey to your goal.
What is different about the car ride and the helicopter ride? The focus.
We choose what we want to focus on and that determines where our precious energy is used. When we are working towards our goals and dreams, we can choose to zoom in on the hurdles and become fixated by them. Doing so will likely discourage us and our goals and dreams will start to fade away. Yet when we rise above, and look at the broader picture, the hurdles and bumps vanish. Instead our eyes are on the goal and we savor the ride.

Sometimes when we get caught up in life the bumps in the road seem to draw our attention more than the road itself. This is a great reminder to keep our ‘eyes on the prize’ and use the energy we have to accomplish the things we really want. Thanks!
